In June 2023, the two-storey residential home in Blackpool suffered severe fire damage, originating in the converted loft space which was used as an office.
The fire completely destroyed the roof, heavily damaged the two upstairs bedrooms and bathroom, and left significant smoke damage throughout the downstairs. Additionally, water damage from firefighting efforts and exposure to the elements further compromised the structure.
The fire occurred during the night while the homeowners were asleep – it was their dog’s barking that alerted them, allowing them to escape unharmed. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, but it was classified as an electrical fire.
The severity of the damage necessitated an extensive restoration process. Insurance claims processes and a phased approach further extended the project timeline, requiring methodical execution by AIR to restore the McNickle’s home.
The insurance company required the fire damage repair project to be phased, with each stage re-tendered for separately:
The first priority was to secure the property. Given the extensive damage, temporary protective measures were implemented. A full scaffold structure with plastic sheeting was erected to shield the home from weather-related deterioration.
The next phase involved obtaining approvals and reinstating the roof and loft structure. New purlins, Velux windows, and insulation were installed in compliance with structural and architectural requirements. A building notice was submitted, and inspections ensured regulatory compliance.
Once structural integrity was restored, the interior was stripped back to brick, removing damaged plaster, ceilings, and fixtures. Floors were retained where possible. Following this, specialised drying equipment was deployed to eliminate residual moisture, with certification provided upon completion.
